This week is going to be a rough one. With severe drought and fierce winds, forest fires continue to ravage huge areas in parts of southern Europe. There is no end in sight to the heat. Currently, there are warnings for numerous vacation countries for the Austrians:
▶Portugal: Here, the situation is particularly serious. On Sunday alone, two new forest fires broke out. Six hundred fifty-nine people died in the past seven days due to the heat wave; most elderly. One weather station already reported 47°.
▶Spain: With highs of 45.7°, temperatures remain “unusually high,” authorities warn. Fires are raging in the province of Malaga, affecting residents near the popular tourist resort of Mijas.
▶France: A fire south of Bordeaux that had been raging for days appeared to be under control but has now flared up again. Rails are overheated, and overhead lines are extended. That’s why trains currently have to travel more slowly.
▶Italy: Due to the low amount of rain and snowfall this year, there is drought, especially in northern Italy. Milan and Venice are now turning off public drinking fountains to save water.
▶Greece: Authorities plan to evacuate resorts as a precaution if nearby fires cannot be brought under control. Cell phone owners, whether they have a domestic or foreign contract, will then be warned by text message. Athens and the surrounding area, Crete and Euboea, Lesvos and Samos are particularly affected.
▶Morocco: Drought and 45° repeatedly fuel forest fires – for example, in Larache. More than 1320 families from 19 villages have already been evacuated.
▶Germany: A heat wave is expected here with temperatures up to 40° and a temporary peak on Tuesday.
